Who the classes are for

Every child comes to learning Islam from a different starting point. In the free trial the teacher talks with your child, finds out what they already know, and starts from there.

Ages 5 and 6 — stories, manners and first duas

Short, lively lessons built around the stories of the prophets, simple manners like saying salam and thanking Allah, and the duas for eating and going to sleep.

Ages 7 to 10 — wudu and salah

The steps of wudu and the positions and words of salah, practised until they come naturally, with the meaning of what your child recites in each prayer.

Ages 11 to 14 — Aqeedah and Seerah, properly

What Muslims believe and why, the life of the Prophet ﷺ from beginning to end, and room for the real questions children start asking at this age.

Families with no Islamic school nearby

No Islamic school or weekend madrasa within reach? Regular one-to-one lessons give your child structured teaching at home. Families join from more than 25 countries, including the USA, the UK, Canada and Australia.

New Muslim families

Parents who came to Islam as adults often want their children to learn what they never had the chance to. The teacher starts from the very beginning and takes nothing for granted.

Children who also learn the Quran

Islamic studies can be combined with Quran lessons, so your child understands the surahs they memorize and knows how to pray with them.

What your child learns

The program covers Aqeedah, Fiqh, Seerah, Tafsir and good character, in the order below. Younger children meet each subject through stories and practice; older children go deeper. Practical activities and short quizzes show what has stayed.

  1. 1

    Aqeedah — what Muslims believe

Who Allah is and why we worship Him alone (tawheed), explained in words a child understands. The six pillars of iman — belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day and divine decree — and the five pillars of Islam.

  2. 2

Worship — wudu, salah and fasting

The steps of wudu, the five daily prayers, and the positions and words of salah, practised live with the teacher. Then what fasting in Ramadan means, and how children can practise it before it becomes obligatory.

  3. 3

Seerah and the stories of the prophets

The life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — his childhood in Makkah, the first revelation, the hijrah to Madinah — and the stories of the prophets told in the Quran, from Adam and Nuh to Ibrahim, Yusuf, Musa and Isa.

  4. 4

    Adab, character and daily duas

Honesty, kindness, respect for parents and greeting with salam, together with the short duas for everyday moments — eating, sleeping, leaving the house — and the morning and evening adhkar.

  5. 5

    Tafsir of the short surahs

What Al-Fatihah and the short surahs a child recites in salah actually say — Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas, Al-Asr and others — and the lesson each one carries.

Why parents choose Tarteelul-Azhar

A dedicated teacher

Your child learns with the same teacher, who knows what they have covered, what they found hard, and which questions they asked last time.

Teachers trained at Al-Azhar

Native Arabic speakers, Al-Azhar graduates and memorizers of the Quran, who teach Islam as it is studied at Al-Azhar — in words a child can follow.

Explained in your language

We have teachers who speak English, French, German, Spanish and Italian, so ideas like tawheed or the Last Day are explained in the language your child thinks in.

Learning by doing

Practical activities and short quizzes mean your child practises what they learn — the steps of wudu, the words of a dua — instead of only listening.

Frequently asked questions

From what age can my child start Islamic studies classes?

We accept children from 4 years old. For the youngest, lessons are short and built around stories, simple duas and good manners. Wudu and salah are taught properly from about 7, the age at which the Prophet ﷺ told parents to instruct their children to pray, in a hadith reported by Abu Dawud. The free trial shows where your child should start.

What do kids learn in online Islamic studies classes?

The five parts of the program: Aqeedah (the pillars of iman and tawheed), the Fiqh of worship (wudu, salah and fasting), Seerah and the stories of the prophets, adab and daily duas, and Tafsir of the short surahs. Al-Azhar trained teachers explain each one at your child's level.

Does my child need to speak Arabic?

No. Teachers explain in English, and we also have teachers who speak French, German, Spanish and Italian. Duas, short surahs and key words such as salah or tawheed are learned in Arabic, with their meaning explained.

Are the lessons one-to-one, and how long are they?

Every lesson is private and one-to-one, live on Zoom with a dedicated teacher — we do not run group classes. Lessons last 30, 45 or 60 minutes, from one to seven times a week, at times that suit your time zone.

Can Islamic studies be combined with Quran lessons?

Yes. Islamic studies can be combined with Quran reading or memorization lessons, so your child learns what the surahs mean and how to use them in salah. Tell us at the free trial what you would like your child to study.

Can my daughter learn with a female teacher?

Yes. Our team includes female teachers qualified by Al-Azhar. Ask for a female teacher when you book the free trial and we will match your child with one, subject to availability.

How will I know what my child is learning?

The teacher sends regular progress notes, and short quizzes show what your child has retained. Lessons take place at home on Zoom, so you can sit in whenever you like and hear exactly what is being taught.

How much do online Islamic classes for kids cost?

Plans start at £16 a month ($20.32) for four 30-minute one-to-one lessons, and you pay only for the lessons you choose. Families with two or more children get 5% off 30 and 45-minute plans. The first lesson is free, and paid plans come with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
