The first lesson is a free trial.

Who the classes are for

Children start at different points. In the free trial the teacher listens to your child and places them at the right stage.

Ages 4 to 6 — first letters

Recognising and pronouncing the Arabic letters, and learning short surahs by ear. Lessons stay lively, with plenty of repetition and praise.

Ages 7 to 10 — reading the mushaf

Finishing the Noorani Qaida, reading the Quran with the correct vowels, and starting Juz Amma by heart.

Ages 11 to 14 — Tajweed and Hifz

Applying the Tajweed rules while reciting, and memorizing with a written revision plan the child can follow on their own.

Children who already read

They skip what they know and go straight to recitation correction or memorization.

Children who don't speak Arabic

No Arabic is needed to start. Teachers explain in English and begin from the alphabet.

Brothers and sisters

Each child has their own lesson at their own level, and families with two or more children get 5% off 30 and 45-minute plans.

What your child learns

One clear path from the alphabet to fluent recitation and memorization. Each stage is finished properly before the next one begins.

  1. 1

    Noorani Qaida

The Arabic letters, where each sound comes from, the short and long vowels and how letters join. This is the foundation for reading — most children read on their own within about six months, depending on age and practice at home.

  2. 2

    Reading the Quran

Moving from the Qaida to the mushaf: reading with the correct harakat, at a steady pace, and stopping and starting in the right places.

  3. 3

    Tajweed

The rules of recitation — noon sakinah, meem sakinah, madd, qalqalah and more — learned through the child's own reading and corrected live by the teacher.

  4. 4

    Memorization (Hifz)

Starting with Juz Amma: a new portion each lesson, with daily, weekly and monthly revision so what is memorized stays memorized.

  5. 5

Islamic studies, if you want it

Lessons can also cover Aqeedah, Fiqh, Seerah and Tafsir explained for children, alongside the Quran.

Why parents choose Tarteelul-Azhar

A dedicated teacher

Your child learns with the same teacher, who knows exactly where they are and what comes next.

Teachers trained at Al-Azhar

Native Arabic speakers, Al-Azhar graduates and memorizers of the Quran — the people a child should learn correct recitation from.

Explained in your language

Teachers speak English, and also French, German, Spanish and Italian, so a child is never lost in a lesson.

Books and writing included

After the trial the teacher sends the books for your child's level, and teaches writing on the Zoom whiteboard.

How lessons stay safe and accountable

  • Every lesson is one-to-one between your child and their teacher — no group calls with other students.
  • You can ask for a female or a male teacher when you book, subject to availability.
  • Lessons happen on Zoom at home, on a device you control, and you can sit in at any time. For children under seven we recommend it.
  • The teacher keeps you informed with regular progress notes.
  • The first lesson is a free trial, and paid plans come with a 7-day money-back guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

From what age can my child start online Quran classes?

We accept children from 4 years old. At 4 to 6 the focus is the Arabic letters and short surahs by ear; reading the mushaf usually follows from about 7. The free trial tells you whether your child is ready and where they should start.

How long until my child can read the Quran on their own?

It depends on the child's age and how much they practise at home, but most of our students read the Quran independently within about six months of starting the Noorani Qaida.

Are the classes one-to-one or in a group?

All our classes are private and one-to-one: your child has a dedicated teacher and the whole lesson is spent on their reading. We do not run group classes.

Can my daughter learn with a female teacher?

Yes. Our team includes female teachers qualified by Al-Azhar. Ask for a female teacher when you book the free trial and we will match your child with one, subject to availability.

How long is each lesson, and how many lessons a week?

Lessons last 30, 45 or 60 minutes, from one to seven times a week. For younger children, shorter lessons several times a week work better than one long lesson.

How much do online Quran classes for kids cost?

Plans start at £16 a month ($20.32) for four 30-minute one-to-one lessons, and you pay only for the lessons you choose. Families with two or more children get 5% off 30 and 45-minute plans. The first lesson is free.

What does my child need for the lessons?

A computer or tablet with Zoom, a camera and a microphone, and a quiet corner. After the trial the teacher sends the books that match your child's level.

Which countries and time zones do you teach?

Families join from more than 25 countries, including the USA, the UK and Canada. Lessons are booked at times that suit your time zone, so they can fit around school.
